The Beloit College Mindset List is a list of things that pertain to the college class of 2014. This is my opinion on some of the things listed there.
First of all, I find the very first post pretty interesting. I totally agree with it, and it pertains to me as well. After you take the ACT test, they tell you to copy a sentence in cursive saying that you are who you say you are and that you didn't cheat. As soon as the people in the room I was in heard these instructions, I heard many groans. It was just one sentence to copy down and it took the whole room about ten minutes to do it. Personally, it was a little difficult to do because I couldn't remember what half the letters looked like. I mean, I was only taught this once like way back in 3rd or 4th grade, how do they expect me to remember it?
The next one I found interesting was number eleven. It stated that John McEnroe has never played professional tennis. This is very true, the oldest tennis players I can remember actually seeing on T.V. were Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. I remember that my brother Jacob would always cheer for Sampras and I would always hoot and holler for Agassi. I don't really know why I always cheered for him besides the fact that he was bald and looked cooler than Sampras and his curly hair. Although I never saw him play, I still love to watch Youtube videos of Johnny McEnroes outburts on my laptop.
One thing that I don't agree with is number 65. It says that, "They first met Michelangelo when he was just a computer virus." I don't know if I have lived a sheltered life or what, but I have never even heard of the Michelangelo Virus. He has always been known as the painter of the Sistine Chapel. I beleive I was first introduced to him while in maybe 6th grade in history class. Most recently though, when I hear his name I think of that scene in the movie "Hitch" where Will Smith tells Kevin James that he is Michelangelo and Kevin is the Sistine Chapel, which is of course reffering to the fact that Hitch is going to help Albert get Allegra Cole as a girlfriend..... Wow my mind wanders a lot.
As a whole, I think most of the things on this list are pretty accurate. The class of 2014 is used to doing this a certain way, and would definitely feel out of place if all of the technology they have grown so accustomed to was taken away.
I disagree with what you said about cursive writing. I remember exactly what your talking about when we had to write one sentence in cursive for the ACT. At first I was like oh crap, but then it all came back to me and I was able to write the sentence without any difficulty. I feel like our generation knows how to write in cursive still if you just stop and think about it for awhile. I definitely agree with what you said about Michelangelo and Kevin James is the man.
ReplyDeleteI also remember that portion of the ACT test, but I didn't find it difficult. I somewhat write in cursive in everyday life. Maybe it's a girl thing. I have also never heard of Michaelangelo as being a virus.. I've only known of him as a very famous artist. I also want to add.. Who actually watches tennis?!
ReplyDeleteJoey, I also disagree with the cursive statement. I actually use it a lot. However, I totally agree with your Michelangelo argumenment. The name doesn't bring Hitch to mind, but interesting point:)
ReplyDeleteI agree with the cursive writing, I know that most of kids in my class could not remember how to write in cursive. We had to set a day aside to refresh everyone's memory!
ReplyDeleteThe comment you made about cursive makes me wonder why that was not on my test.
ReplyDeleteWell Joey, I don't know about the cursive thing. Maybe its kinda dependent on your area. As for the Micheangelo virus... like you I was completely confused. However, the same goes for John McEnroe... some of these things on this list I didn't know about I don't care about them.. like tennis.
ReplyDeleteLol, no offense, but it only took me maybe a minute to finish that cursive sentence at the end of the ACT test. Maybe it's just my forte in design that helps me remember the cursive symbols. I have never heard of the Michealangelo virus, though.
ReplyDeleteI remember having to write those sentences in cursive on the ACT’s , I was the one that had to lean over and ask someone how to write different letters .
ReplyDeleteI agree with your first statement. I believe i was one of the groans when I took the ACT's. I don't remember half the letters as well. I see the cursive statement is a very well liked topic.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the Michelanglo. I have never heard of a Michelanglo virus either but I have heard about his paintings and statues
ReplyDeleteGreat points joey! little side note, since I am guessing you like tennis from your post, did you see the tennis match this summer that last 11 hours! Crazy! I didn't have to write have to write a sentence in cursive when I took the ACT but i guess it would have stressed me out even more having to figure it out again. I would have been able to do it, it just would not have been as nice looking as I would have wanted.
ReplyDeleteI remember writing a sentence in cursive on the ACT, but it wasnt very difficult for me. I use cursive alot so it wasnt a big deal, but i saw others struggling to get it down.
ReplyDeleteI know McEnroe because of his rants. I always thought those were funny.
